Safe alternative way to highlight my hair while pregnant?

I know there is no conclusive evidence on whether hair products are harmful or not when you are pregnant, but I don't want to take any chances. I was wondering if there are any natural alternatives to getting salon highlights. Does lemon juice really work? Will it damage my hair really bad? My hair is light blond now and my dark blonde roots are showing. Is there anything I can do that doesn't use chemicals?

Highlights are supposed to be relatively safe, compared to coloring all of your hair. Your scalp is not as immersed with chemicals as it is when you dye all of your hair.

With that said, I am 5 months pregnant and I tend to avoid perms, dyes, highlights, even nail polish. But I'm a little extreme.

There are natural ways to highlight your hair, depending on its current color. For light hair, use chamomile or rhubarb. To add dark rich highlights to dark hair, use cinnamon sticks, sage, or lavender. For red highlights, use dry hibiscus flowers or tea bags with hibiscus.

they do say highlights are actually better than hairdye because the highlights do not actually touch your scalp but I do understand not taking the chance. Yes lemon juice is a natural hair lightener and it will work but I dont know how successful it will be to lighten roots--i think it will only bring out your natural highlights. why dont you try dying your hair with a non permanent hair dye that is a little darker than your natural color so you dont have to maintain the roots during your pregnancy. The non permanent is ok to use because there is no ammonia but check with your doc--mine said it was fine to use.

Get some nice headshots taken, that show off your hair. Attach your resume with whatever acting or modeling you have done. Send them to agents that specialize in commerical, and see where that takes you.

HELP!! i put 'sun in' in my hair unaware that it was a progressive dye and that i would be unable to dye my hair again. my hair was strawberry blond but the 'sun in' made it go more orange!! i wanted to dye my hair blonde at the hair dressers but the said because i used the 'sun in' i couldn't dye my hair. i waited awhile but still hated it so i just dyed it brown with semi dye at home. it worked so now that ive dyed on top of it and its grown out a few inches can i get it dyed at the hair dressers?? what will happen if i dye it??

Sun-In has been around for ages and all it is is peroxide and water basically.

It bleaches your hair. It does not "dye" your hair. Peroxide (or bleach) removes pigment from your hair.

To simplify the chemical explanation, all hair has "undertones". Your natural hair color (the color you were born with) has an undertone of orange if that's what you ended up with when bleaching it.

Coloring hair ADDS pigment.

Two different processes.

By the way, "dye" is what is used in textiles. "Haircolor" is the proper terminology for anything with pigment in it that changes your hair color.

Whatever salan you went to, they were full of it and didn't know what they were talking about. Progressive dye?? WTF? OK forget what they said.

It's a bleach.

You can color over bleach but you have to know what you are doing and beware of breakdown of the integrity of your hair and that the color results will vary because of the previous bleaching.

Soooo, YES YOU CAN color (not dye) your roots. Go to a good stylist to get it done and tell them everything you've done to your hair. The more your stylist knows about what's in your hair, the better job they can do.

Probably, but you don't have to do that just for the lighter hair. You can squeeze a little bit less than 1/2 of a lemon into a bowl with about 1/4 cup of water.

1.Rinse your hair out.

2.Stick a PEA size amount of your shampoo into your hair and rub in.

3.Rinse that out.

4.Pour lemon mixture into your hair and rub in.

5.Only rinse out a little, but not so little that you smell like a lemon meringue pie, but enough that you still smell lemony fresh.

well i'd like to make my hair blonder then it is. so my question is should i get the hair dye at the stores or use lemon juice becuase i've heard that works. which one won't dry out my hair as much? i know going to a beauty saloon would be the best option butt that's expensive to dye your hair.

Lemon juice does work naturally but it may not give you the results you want. As opposed to dying it, try Sun In, its a spray bottle and lightens your hair and it costs about $3.00. Its better for your hair, less chemicals and will give you better results then lemon juice. :)

Well... lemon juice can work but you have to put it on your hair, then go out in the sun...

Bleaching at home can be less expensive but if you don't have someone there to help you, it can end up in disaster =P

Bleaching does dry out your hair because it removes the natural pigment of your hair and strips away color and moisture. I have used bleach and my hair didn't get too dry, just use a damage repairing shampoo %26amp; conditioner afterwards. AND DON'T FORGET THAT DEEP CONDITIONER!!!

Lemon juice is a natural acid and can do the same thing.

But as long as you have a good deep conditioner and don't leave it on too long, it'll all be fine.

Go to Sally's and ask them for a good deep conditioner after bleaching.

Just don't use perioxide!!!!!!!!!!

i dont suggest using lemon juice i know a lot of people do it, and it does work, but the acids really are not good for your hair, and the sun isnt always good for your hair either, and if you do decide to get real haircolor or highlights or any type of chemical done to your hair afterwards, it could do some damage, id rather you be safe and go to a salon, you would be happier with it.

since you've been dying your hair darker for years it's going to be very difficult to remove without bleaching it.

my advice is to slowly go lighter, like next time you dye your hair dye it brown, then light brown, then dark blond.

also try mixing around 1 tablespoon of baking soda with your shampoo and wash your hair out with it and you should see the hair dye just wash out

when i used to curl my hair i'd put hairspray in it and a little mousse at the roots, wind it up into these 2-3 buns on my head, then sleep with it like that. when i get up i'd cut off the rubberbands and shake my hair out. BAM. fantastic curls.

get hot sticks... not rollers there is a difference. hot stick take about 20 minutes to heat up then they only need like 5 in your hair to curl it really really good. i suggest experimenting on the weekend though because you have o get the hang of which way to roll them and how tightly but they are really fast and effective or you could always scrunch it and use some gel

put hot curlers in your hair right when you get up, and then while you are putting on your makeup, eating breakfast or whatever, they are setting. Start right down the middle of your head first, and then do the sides and all around. Another option is to wash your hair the night before and make little buns all around your head while it is wet. Go to bed and then when you wake up take them out, and you will have wavy curls.

wash and roller set your hair before going to bed and sleep with a net or scarf wrapped around them so that your hair will be nice and curly in the morning when you remove the rollers after you have done your morning routine

I love having curly hair but HATE curling it- it takes soooooo long- but this was easiler cause you are just a clasp, wrap and pull to from a perfect bouncy curl!

it takes practice so practice at night, then do it in the morning.

To make them bouncier and on days when I have to leave the house super early, I do it at night. After I pull the iron through, while still hot, I take my hair and wrap it around a curler- either a plastic one or one of those 'pillow' or 'soft' curlers. I do this for my whole head and in the morning I take them out and VOLIA! Curly, bouncey hair. also, don't go crazy with the hair spry, it will wiegh it down.

I also use sometimes heated curlers. I love them but I have WAY too much hair and need to use two sets so using a flat iron method is easier and faster-much faster than a curling iron in my opinion. Because, with a curling iron, you roll it onto the barrel but have to hold it and stand there for sometime while with the flat iron, you just pull it through. Just make sure you use one with rounded plates or else it won't work as well....

about two years ago i dyed my hair blond, i bleached it. and then i dyed it brown shorty after that.... and then last january i dyed it red and its pretty much washed out but i just want my natural hair color. is there a way i can get rid of it besides getting it stripped by a salon? is there something i can buy?

Uh... well you're not really going to get your hair back to natural just because you've bleached it. That strips all the natural color out of it. What you can do is let your roots grow out and ask a hair stylist to match that color as best as they can. That way you can grow it back out to natural hair without having to worry about roots and junk.

If you are using shampoo that helps to preserve the hair dye color, stop using it. That might help a little bit.

they do have a color remover at the beauty supply stores any product that takes color out of hair has some kind of lightener you really have to just strip that color out if your going back to blond and then just condition it and it will be alright before you change your color again try on wigs .even if your not going blond you have to start lighter to get the right shade of what ever color you want back

PRO'S: makes the hair dye molecules shrink so tiny that you can wash them right out. Takes 20 minutes and it really does work.

Whenever I have bleached my hair I have always bought that little tube of purple stuff to mix in with it. You can buy it at any beauty supply store. However, I am not sure if it will work now that it has been 3 weeks.

I personally think that brassy highlights look better on really dark haired people.

Now, about the Manic Panic....With black hair I think you should go with the blue it would look the best.

Semi-Permanent Hair Dye Question?

I currently have medium blonde hair with natural blonde hightlights. My hair is usually a little darker than this, but I used a product called sun-in to make it lighter. Now my hair is medium blonde but it kind of has an orangey tint to it. Can I use a semi-permanent hair dye like Clairol Natural Instincts to make my hair blonder and not so orange? And once the dye fades away, will it totally go back to my original color or my lighter color from the sun-in product?

if the sun-in product goes away with the dye then it will go back to your natural hair color. you can try using a non permanent hair dye first in case it doesn't work or you don't like it. the sun-in thingy could have faded a little, making your hair orangish. or sometimes after a while some hair dyes become kind of a different color. btw the dye will make your hair blonder but be sure to choose the right color!

I went to Sally's and bought bleach the first time and touched up my highlights. The easiest way to do it is to buy the highlight wands they almost look like mascara applicators but bigger. You just grab the blond hairs and hold them up and dip the wand into the bleach and brush it through. You can buy the bleach sets too anywhere from $10-$20. There is nothing wrong with trying. go to Google video and search for DIY highlights. Just don't buy walmart boxed up dyes. Get the pro stuff from a beauty supply. The top is gone bright orangey (my regrowth from previous dyes, the colour growing back was ash blond/brown which is about 3 1/2 inches... and my hair is only twice that length), and the rest is a mucky brown!! it's up to you really, if you want to try and continue turning it blonde.I would suggest that your best bet would be to go to a salon and get it done properly, because turning black hair into blonde is a ****** and a half.

Trust me, I've done it myself, at home.

If you still want to go blonde, wait maybe a week or so, and every day condition your hair like crazy, use lots of olive oil.

Then bleach your hair again, but only bleach the sections that are still a dark color. Once your hair becomes an orange-y color, go and buy a purple-based toner from your nearest beauty store, like Sallys.

This toner will take out the orange/red color from your hair, leaving it an ashy blonde.

I've dyed my hair blonde from black, and it goes turn orange. What I would do is dye it brown and wait for 2 or 5 weeks to dye it again, so its not such a big change [black to bleach blonde]. I have done this to my hair, and kept trying, my hair started breaking off, you should consult a professional ASAP and start getting some deep conditioning treatments in the meantime to restor your hair. At this point, don't try to go blonde because to get an even result you will need to lift out the pigments in your hair %26amp; then dye your hair to the desired shade of blond. It sounds like your hair can't take much more.

I vote for going light brown %26amp; having it done @ a salon. Single process hair coloring runs about $60 but may cost more because of your hair's current condition.

If you decide to DIY - do a test on a small, lengthwise section of hair so you can see how the color takes over the entire range of colors. Then if you're please w/ the results go a head. Buy 2 kits %26amp; keep the receipt just in case you decide to return the unused kit. Doing a test will be well worth the time %26amp; effort. If you don't like the results %26amp; need a professional - you won't have nearly as much damage. If you like the results, you can be more confident about doing your entire head of hair.

It sounds as if you have just about chemically destroyed your existing hairs, and at the rate you've been going, you could well have even damaged the roots. If I had ever done that to my hair, I think I would have it all shaved off and hope and pray I had some of it grow back halfway normal. I think it would be absolutely crazy to slosh any more chemicals on your head to be absorbed through the scalp and into the hair follicles. For goodness sakes, give them a chance to recover from their nuking.

First of all, a brown color won't cover up the orangey-ness of your hair. I have been licensed to do hair for 16 years now and have seen many people do this kind of thing to their hair and come in and want it fixed. It takes a lot of time and a lot of work so you pay a lot of money to have it professionally fixed. One mistake you made was taking the bleach off your hair when it did turn orange because in the process of removing the black pigment from your hair, it actually has to go through levels of color before it gets to blonde. It will go from black to a red to an orange to a yellow and finally to white blonde. To remove black hair color is a pain in the butt because the process tends to damage hair to hell. Especially hair that has been done over and over again. Your hair probably feels sticky when its wet and stretches really far if its tangly when you wash it, right? That is a sign of damage. No hot oil or deep conditioning is ever going to be able to fix that. It will have to be cut off. If you want to keep going toward your blonde goal, you need to use on the scalp bleach and use a hooded hair dryer, like the ones in the salon, because to get rid of the darkness and orange color you need to open the cuticle layer of your hair and release the pigment that is already there and you need to use heat to get passed the orange level. After you get the blonde done at the root/newgrowth area that you want, then you could use the same bleach and do the ends of your hair. Don't do both parts of your hair at the same time for the simple fact that the root area of your hair will process faster just because of the heat that is put off from your head. I was walking to class one day at Cal poly Pomona in February 2000 when I noticed a blond girl with permed hair smiling at me. She looked at my T-shirt which had a Third eye Blind logo on it. We passed each other that day since I was late for class. Then on October 11, 2002 I was walking to the parking lot when I noticed the same girl looking at me. She gave me yes nod and then she smiled at me looking at my t-shirt again. I didnt pay any attention to her after that, but when I turned around to see her, she looked back at me and waited for me. I got scared and went to my car. But when I looked back she was gone. well, I havent seen her since then. How do I know she is interested in me or thinks I look good.

It depends. You used both the words "bleach" and "dye." Those are two different things.

But if you meant bleach, it depends how blond you want. Xtreme FX will bleach your hair WHITE (im not kidding) without damaging it.

It really depends on how blond you want it. Either way, dont buy the cheapest bleach. I've used just about every brand there is at Walmart, and the cheapest ones are always the crappiest ones that turn your hair into straw.

You know what would be nice. It would probably look good if you got some anti frizz cream and touched up the ends to make it look sleeker and died it a dark burgundy color since you seem to have a lighter complexion. With your dark eyebrows it wouldn't matter and the color might give ya a little exciting spark plus look really nice!

Go for a rich auburn brown- you look like you have quite fair skin, so this will make you look more summery-black faded always gives a washed out look- try also a henna deep conditioning treatment-( you can usually get them at a supermarket/department store) if you still can't make up your mind. I recently dyed my hair bleach blond. Most of the overall color looks blonde but I do have some orange spots (I had highlights before). Can I use a toner to get rid of the orange and a few yellow spots? How do I know I picked the right toner? Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Go to your stylist. You are in over your head on this one and if you try to correct this yourself, may your guardian angel be sitting on your shoulder. Just too many problems from the description you have given of your hair in it's present condition. Toners that would correct the orange spots will not correct the yellow spots and vice versa. You could end up looking somewhat like a blond calico cat. Again, go to your stylist. I do know what I'm talking about. I have specialized in color correction for 13 years. I sure hope you take this advice and don't risk trashing your hair.

I recommend you find a stylist who you've gotten good recommendations for. Ask other redheads, especially. Even if you don't know them...really! They'll be flattered!

Brown or black would be pretty easy, but lightening will probably just get you a lighter shade of auburn. Not that this is bad...just don't expect to get blonde.

Personally, I recommend black with your red. First, try a black wig and see if the color works with your skin. If not, you want the front area red, no matter what. The rest you can do as you want with, since it your face won't reflect it, anyway.

Brown or black would be pretty easy, but lightening will probably just get you a lighter shade of auburn. Not that this is bad...just don't expect to get blonde.

I don't know what shade of red hair you have and it would depend. I have really dark red hair so black would show up but it wouldn't be that drastic. Dye your whole head strawberry blonde and then underneath really dark brown. The colors should complement each other but still appear very bold. I would never do this to my own head, but if it is the look you are going for I think it would work out.

Professionally, this look is outdated now. Dimension in hair color is always in but drastic, two toned is not happening. If you have a lovely red then why not punch up your tone and perhaps drop your nape color a level or two but in the red family. The effect will compliment what you already have and be similar to the drastic look but more refined and current. Best of luck.

actually, the only thing in that kind of shampoo that is supposed to make it do that is some sort of reflective ingredient (same thought behind laundry detergents that claim to brighten clothing). it'll make your hair appear lighter but that's only because it's reflecting the light around you. it's doesn't chemically change your hair color.

I did the same thing that you did. I dyed my hair from platinum blonde to my natural color (a light brown). It all is almost faded now, and it isn't even my natural color anymore. It will most likely continue to fade until your hair is much lighter than the dye you chose, but never lighter than before you colored. When you notice that the color hasn't washed out anymore, use a second box of dye in the same color. That should help and prevent from fading.

any tips on how to streak blond highlights into my hair using something other than the hat they provide in the box. The hat must of fell out on way home as I have searched everywhere.. If you should try to do it without, you could end up getting anything from leopard like yellow/orange spots on your hair from the bleach leaking thru whatever other method you come up with from this forum. Doing foils yourself isn't recommended either because even as a professional it takes me some skill to do my own, and yes I have messed my own up when I first tried it. BTW, if they won't exchange it for whatever reason, you can always go to Sally's beauty supply and buy a single use cap cheaply.

You can put highlights in using tin foil, but if you have no experience of doing this I would wait until you can get a cap.

I'd go and get a new cap. You could try going to a salon and asking for a streaking cap, I don't think they'd have any objections to giving/selling you one. Alternatively, you could use foils, but it really depends on how experienced you are with them. Either way, you should get somebody to help you out, cap or not, because it can be a pain in the backside getting it even and neat. :]

Personally i would go back to the shop and tell them the cap was missing, can it please be replaced! I cant think of anything that can be used as a cap subsitute. There is the foil application you could try, which will be quite difficalt if you have not done this before. You could always give it a go though or ask for a replacment cap.

I need some new shampoo and conditioner and I was looking at some shampoos and I found head and shoulders. I was wondering if you thought it would be a good shampoo for my type of hair.

My other shampoo choices were pantene, sunsilk and organix.

You seem to have pretty normal hair, so a shampoo like White Rain will work fine. If you're looking for more volume, invest in a salon shampoo. They are the worth the money and require less product.

Wow. Some of these people... I have used Head and Shoulders for probably 10 years now. I will not switch shampoos because I know what I am getting. My hair is fine as it's NOT "falling out", and I don't get dandruff if I use another brand. I use it because it keeps my hair soft and clean. I didn't have a dandruff problem when I started using it and I still don't. Try different brands to see what you like best. In the end you're the one that needs to be happy. Good luck!

i'm personally not a fan of the smell of head and shoulders. for some reason herbal essences tends to dry out my hair causing dandruff so i dont recommend it. Pantene has always worked great and so have Aussie and Tresemme on my hair. Dont fall into the hype that you cant have healthy hair without salon shampoos. i'm sure theyre good for your hair but they tend to damage your pocketbook lol

On first few applications hair feels great and silky, but this is because they can contain silicon, which coats your hair. Eventually this builds up on the hair surface and your hair feels awful! (its a bit like chlorine build up when you swim alot)

Instead, why not go into a salon that retails, they do cost more but they are worth it and do last alot longer..

maybe Paul Mitchell or Redken? something like that..

of shop bought products, someone mentioned herbal essences.. and lush. either of these are good..

(for dry scalps or dandruff, paul mitchell tea tree shampoo is lovely)

I use Herbal Essences. It comes in a bunch of varieties and scents, and I love it.

1. Pantene- A good thing about pantene is that it is great for dyed hair. It also makes your hair shiny and thicker. A bad thing is that It actually coats your hair with wax, forcing you to use a clarifying shampoo one week per month, or else your hair will become weighed down and break.

2. Sunsilk- I've heard pretty good things about this type of shampoo. Just make sure to get the right type for your hair.

3. Head and shoulders- I would not recommend that you use this, especially if you don't have dandruff.

4. Herbal Essences- It comes in tons of varieties, it's inexpensive, and it smells SO GOOD. Whichever type you choose of this, it will do its job well and aromatically. However, I have heard that there is a damaging alcohol substance, that may cause your hair damage... I have not experienced this. I've used this brand for about 7 months now, and I am satisfied with it. Did I mention that it smells awesome? =)
