Hair change?

I have really long naturally curly hair that drags half way down my back with 3 different types of blond highlights, am natural hair color is dark brown. I was thinking of a total change like having chopped of to my sholders, color it black with blue effect and leave it naturally curly or redo my highlights and have it short to my sholders. what do you reckon?

It is becoming a pain having to straighten and blow dry my hair if i want it stright and even that doesnt help when its humid or raining! any advice!

im a hair dresser.i advice you not to die your hair black.if you do it will be very hard to get your blonde colour back if u dnt like it. and if you can cope with your hair short then go for it.dont forget the roots yours girll! they will grow again.!! good luck, just go for a nice brown with a few lowlights bbe. its the best and in styl now

You should dye your hair back to its natural color and get some soft hightlights and cut. It'll be less maitence and leave it curly. Straighten it once in a while to not damage your hair.

P.S Use a good serum after you wash your hair to define your curls and bring some shine.

alright well when i was younger i always wanted to be blond. (my hair is naturally medium brown) so basically every summer for about three years i would get highlights or use some cheap peroxide/lemon based gel in the sun. by the school year my hair would be blondish orange and would eventually grow out. last summer i had my grandma(a hairdresser) put bleach blond chunky highlights in my hair, which i hated and immediately ran to cvs and bought a box of my original hair color and dyed it back. unfortunately about two weeks or so, as the color was fading, the highlights were coming back out to reveal ugly brassy tones. so ever since then ive just been dyeing my hair every 2 months or so. now in april i'm going on vacation to the bahammas and since i'm going to be tan i want my hair to be a little lighter than my normal tone, but i don't want to do highlights. so should i dye it before i go so the sun can work with it? or will the sun work against it? any suggestions.ex brands?pleasehelp

I think you should go to a professional hairdresser and get your hair highlighted using the foil technique. This will make your hair look lighter naturally - and it will not be as noticeable when the roots start to come in. Some salons offer great specials for 1st time customers. Or you could go to a beauty school for a great rate.

To be honest I am a rubber glove queen myself and I like spray Sun In which lightens your hair out in the sun or with a hairdryer BUT I really think you should consult a hairdresser who can give you exactly what you want for the vacation....I envy you the Bahamma trip...it's just great there

Okay, well...maybe it's time to go to a different salon other than your grandma...times and methods have changed since she was in "beauty school".... the brassiness can be toned to make it not so harsh...I would go to a reputable salon and explain your situation. Any good stylist should be able to help you out... Hopefully grandma doesn't have hurt feelings!!

yes dye it before you go to regular color and sun will work with it this is coming from a blond that wanted to go medium brown and ...........well similar to what your going through well the sun will work with it not against it but then again your hair will become really weak and just start falling out you should let it go you might find you like the way it came out if you just sop dying it

formulas are unnatural to your hair. your hair will deteriorate and will become really weak.

stop using brands. the more stuff you put on your hair (besides shampoo and conditioner) the more it will damage your hair.

don't blow dry your hand or dry it by towel either, let it air dry.

DONT LIGHTEN IT YOURSELF. thats why it goes orange. Seriously have a professional do it. I had the opposite problem. I had lighter hair dyed it dark then wanted to go light again but it ended up orangy brown. It is more expensive to have it professionally done but well worth it.

Well for one, your doing to much to your hair. 2nd, if your grandmother is a hair stylist, why are you asking us...she'll will tell you the same thing. You wanna go lighter, your gunna have to strip it, bleach it, or put highlights in it. If u run to Sally's they have this color line that will lighten your shade 2 shades lighter, but Ive never used them, again they are going to be just as harsh.

My suggestion, If u want a lighter shade. Get the highlights, they will be either blond blond or a brassy orange. SO then get a color from Sallys, if they have an orange base, get an ash light brown with more of a blue base, and if they are blond, get a light brown with a violet base, mix equl parts with a 20 volume developer

Why not? I have med brown hair and usually dye it a mahogany red color. This time I bought medium blonde, for a change. I never started dying my hair til a few years ago in my 40's. I am confident with the brand I use. Luminess. Big Lots is the only place I have found it at. It leaves my hair silky and shiny and the color is very natural looking. Why not try the one that is semi-permanant and washes out within a month. That's how I usually test colors.

yea you should. i would go with herbal essences hair color. it gives a natural color without making you look crappy. There are all kinds of hair products. If you are just trying to lighten your hair naturally without using all kinds of hair dyes, go with Sun In. It gives you a naturally lightened color without all the damageing effects of hair dye. Plus it is permanant and you will not have to worry about dying your hair all the time

If the red is still in your hair, ask your grandma to strip the color from your hair and go for any colors that have the word, "ash" in the name... anything that doesn't have red, because that's where the brassiness comes from. Going blond, especially for girls with dark hair, has to be gradual. Try going "Light Ash Brown" then maybe a lighter blond, but the key is: STAY AWAY FROM RED TONES OF ANY KIND.

I think you should dye your hair after you go on vacation. Usually the sun changes your haircolor (but not in a good way).... it will make it orange-y and dry!!! : ( Also, if you go swimming, your hair might turn green! So my vote is: dye it AFTER you go on vacation!!!

What you have to remember is that the base color for brown hair is red. When lightening it will go through different stages of red, orange and yellow which is why when using peroxide/lemon based products your hair turns orange.

Go to a professional hairstylist. Book an appointment for a partial weave.

Tell the stylist that you want a natural looking weave. Make sure you let her/him know that "chunky" is not what you want. Also ask her/him to look at the color swatch book so you both can get a better idea of what colors you really want.

Big note make sure you let the stylist know you've been using home haircolor every two months as some build up and are harder to remove.

My hair was brown w/ some old blond highlights. I can't afford hightlights so I used a box of Loreal Preference which was suppose to be golden blond. It is horrible, my hair is orange. Can I recolor it today? I did it last night. If so what should I put on it? My hair is very short and razored at the ends, when I fix it I have to rat the top %26amp; crown cuz it is so straight, the front goes to the left then I tuck behind my ears %26amp; kinda pull the back out w/ wax, then finger piece it %26amp; spray in place. Here are things that might happen to you:

1.if you still want blonde hair - go to a salon, because if you try to dye your hair at home AGAIN - you will have a catastrophe.

2. if you dye your orange hair into ash blonde or any ASH haircolor - it will turn GREEN! - so no ash!

3. the best thing you could do (if not going to a salon) - buy haidye in color like dark brown or medium brown (perhaps natural or warm brown - but NOT ASH!) - then your haircolor will look fine. Not golden blonde as you wanted, but normal and not ORANGE!

By the way, Loreal Preference is a great hair dye! Only you chose the wrong shade... ;)

You could first try buying a shampoo by Clairol that is called Shimmer Lights. It is used on grey hair or highlights to tone down the brassiness. But don't use it too much or too often as it can turn the scalp and light coloured hair purple. Try it first to see if it will at least tone it down. I do suggest that you go to a hairdresser to have this fixed...you may make it worse. Sounds like you may need your haircut spruced up a bit so you don't have to work on it as much either. If you feel it necessary to dye it yourself...go to an ash brown it will neutralize the gold that is in your hair now. Be patient and it will take some time to fix things. But, like I said, I hairdresser it your best bet.

What happened is that the color you used has a developer that is only 20 volume in strength and it is not strong enough to lighten brown hair to golden blond. The orange color you have now is the underlying pigment of your natural hair color. Natural hair color contains the 3 primary colors: blue, red, and yellow. Dark hair has more blue. Red hair has more red. Blond hair has more yellow. The dark blue is all that the 20 volume developer was strong enough to lift out of your hair. What you need now is to put on a color with an ash base (blue/green) which will neutralize the orange. The problem is without seeing your hair, I cannot tell you what shade or level of ash color to put on your hair. You need to go to a professional so they can see your hair in order to know what color to use to correct this problem.

I have this exact problem as we speak. I bought a color that should have gone a LOT blonder than it did.... it was Nice 'n Easy 104 .... instead, my roots and the rest of my hair has a hint of orange in it. Now, I have read a few articles that say this is because I have not left the dye in long enough ( instead of 25 minutes mine was on for like 33) but I don't think this is so. Does anyone out there REALLY know how anyone can get a HOME fix for this without completely killing the hair on our heads?

it looks like a simple style, after you take away the curls at the tips %26amp; her gorgeous teases tresses. ask for a layered cut around your shoulders [any length would do, really.]

%26amp; for color, take your natural color %26amp; streak it with the colors that aren't already in your hair. like if your a redhead, streak it with dark brown, auburn, and blonde. [not in the same sitting, however, as this could cause color-bleeding and accidental mixing....not very pretty...]

when you get your cut, take the shortest layers, pull them to the front, [after a shower, when your hair can be blow-dried in any form] and just blow dry them to the side. i use bedhead hairspray but you can use any spray you like, and with a comb, just tease the top layer around your scalp...

%26amp; when all else fails, print %26amp; take that picture to your stylist [or email it to her] %26amp; let her do the rest. %26amp; if she can't or isn't sure about it...it's probably time to find a new stylist.

I agree with Morgan, definitely take the picture in when you get it cut. Sometimes describing the haircut to the stylist gives that person a different mental image than what you're actually asking for.

Be sure to tell him/her what it is that you especially like about the cut -- the length, the side-swept bang, etc.

I think I'd ask them while I'm there for suggestions on a new hair color. I like the red in the picture, but maybe you'd look even better with blonde highlights or going a dramatic dark brown.

I don't know what you look like but, it looks like this style would be nice with a medium brown and chuncked in blonde..(very light blonde...) Chuncked...Not streaked...I just had mine streaked and didn't care for it as much...Of course, after it was done I saw some girl with the same coloring and style, but, her's was chuncked.....Loved it!! Usually if you don't leave the dye on long enough or if you're trying to lighten naturally darker hair, it turns out that orange brassy color.

If i were you, I would go to a salon and have them professionally color it. When I dye my hair dark, I do it myself but when lightening it, I always see a professional. They can get it the tone i like without damaging my hair. A salon will be able to get rid of the orange by either re-coloring it or using a toner, which will get rid of the orange but is less harsh than dying it yourself.

You could try the ash blonde-- but I wouldn't reccomend it since you just bleached your hair. It can do a lot of damage and might cause breakage. I'd wait atleast a week before you try it on your own. But definitely stick with ash/neutral tones to prevent having the orange/gold look.

Another thing you can do-- is contact a Sally's Beauty Supply store. You can find a location near you on their website. You could go visit one in your area or call them and a lot of times, they can give you tips and advice on what to do with your hair. They have a shampoo there specifically made to take the brasiness out of blonde hair-- it's called Shimmer Lights. It's a purple shampoo-- it works really well. It might not help depending how orange your hair is, but I use it once a week when i'm blonde just to keep it from turning that yucky orange color. http://www.sallybeauty.com

i've bleached my hair many times. and its normal for your hair to be orange, it's likely you didn't leave the bleach on long enough. when you dye your hair it might be a darker shade of ash blonde depending on how dark the shade of orange you have. if you're worried about it not being light enough, wait a few days and bleach it again. you're hair will turn yellow or white depending on the time you leave the bleach on. hope i helped! oh and remember to do some deep conditioning so you can restore your hair.

When can I redye my hair, and will it fall out?

First time I dyed my hair was December of 2006.

Second time was in February of 2007.

Third time was in August of 2007.

I still have the blond in my hair from dyeing it in August, but I want to dye the blond back to my natural color [black]. My mom said no because it'll fall out, and I'm trying to tell her you only have to wait like 3 months to redye it, and its been I think about 4 or 5? Possibly longer.

It will not be stressful to your hair like the blond. After you dye your hair black (if you choose to do so) trim the ends and make sure you deep condition (sitting under a dryer, with conditioner in your hair with a shower cap on) it alot to restore your hair, try Redken products, or you may want to do that first to restore your hair and let some of the natural color come back on its own, and then dye it back black. Stay away from anything harsh on your hair if you can, that also helps. Good luck.

Scalp damage from bleaching hair.?

a couple days ago i went to get full head blond highlights at the hair dressers. while they were doing my hair the foils started getting really hot and burning my scalp. but luckily i told them and it only really effected one area. the reason it got so hot so fast was because the last time i got my hair done the hair dresser used metallic hair dye, and so the bleach and that had a reaction bleaching my hair much faster than it would have been, but sadly neither the current hair dressers or i knew this. anyway now the hair that's been damadge is hard at the roots..and my scalp hurts in that area and i think its

swollen as well . the area also flakes a lot. any advice on what i should do? and how to make the swolling go down?

It's a chemical burn, probably. The hair has melted together, and your scalp is burned. Like any burn, it hurts and swells. Ice or a cold compress will probably help with the swelling. Also avoid aspirin or ibuprofin, since they are blood thinners and may increase the swelling. The flakes are your body trying to get rid of the burned skin, and your scalp will heal in a few days and the flaking will stop. The hair is probably not repairable, but try putting something like vasaline or shortening on it and see if the oil allows you to comb through it and separate it. Be careful to not get the grease on the skin, though (oil holds heat in burns, so it slows the healing) and wash it off with a good shampoo as soon as you can. Good luck.

girl you got some hair problems. i heard about these extentions by jessica simpson and i think that you should try them. they are cheap and they clip on. if not you can always try braids. but not normal ones since your hair seems short. try french braids or cool ones that you can find on the internet. when i was little i used to do a braid that had a ribbon weaving through it. it looks good and it will hide your short hair.

I used Sun-In a long time ago and it did turn my hair from dark blonde to very golden blonde.......you can use a blow dryer instead of the sun-light. You do have to do a few applications to get your desired blonde.

BUT.......it is very hard to change your hair color after you use it until it grows out. If you try to dye it another color it'll not turn out right (that's where the orange hair comes in!). I had to let the Sun-In'ed hair grow out enough to cut it off.

Since you used a temporary hair color, you shouldn't have any trouble dyeing over it with a permanent one. Temporary hair colors are usually not the best to go with, even if you just want to try it out to see if you MIGHT want to consider dieing it a specific color permanently in the long run due to its strength being so weak. So, it would be no problem dyeing over it.

I'm going to agree with what most people said and say go to a salon. blonde to black hair colouring is hard on the hair at times and can turn out all sorts of crazy shades, as you've learned. If you can't afford a salon's prices, don't forget about your local beauty schools. They often offer a cheaper alternative to the salon (because the students don't get paid), without the worry of doing it yourself and it going crazy. Many of these schools have licensed professional teachers on site managing the students as they work, and many states require that these students have a minimum number of hours under their belts before they're even allowed to dream of working on a real person. It's a good way to go if you're broke, but still want someone who has some experience to hook you up with what you want most.

I totally agree that you should go see a Beauty School Salon if you do not have the funds for a Professional Salon. Being a Student myself, I can assure you that a Professional Instructor will be on hand through this process. This particular situation is a Beauty School's dream to have the opportunity to correct.

My first guess is that you did not use a filler. It is important to use the correct filler before going from Blonde to Black to prevent discolouration as you have experienced. Kind of like using a red primer for your white walls before you actually paint your walls a deep red. Same concept.

Your blonde hair picked up the base color in the Black hair dye leaving it a shade of "purple." Washing your hair ten times will not help very much either. As crazy as this may sound, you could always go to your local Sally's store and ask the opinion of the "Licensed" assistant to help you chose the correct products that can correct your problem. Be sure, though, that the assistant IS in fact a licensed cosmetologist.

Last resort... pay the money it takes to correct this at a professional salon and chalk it up as a learned experience! You may be out of $80, but you will spend that and more if you continue trying to correct this on your own with no prevail.

I am so depressed about my hair. A year ago I had long naturally curly hair. It frizzed easily, but at least it was long and could be pulled back or styled. My hair broke off a lot and got so thin and stringy looking and so hard to do. It was about shoulder length by this time, so I got it trimmed about 3 times within 2 months, and then finally just got it chopped above chin level in layers real short. It has grown a minimal amount since then, but is still so thin. I have gotten opinions from various salons who state my natural curls are growing back in underneath all this damage and are about 2 to 3 inches in length underneath. The damaged hair is about chin length and layered up. It's so hard to style this mess. It's longer in the back than the sides. I cry and mope all the time and

I'd stay away from the bleach and the relaxers, use flat irons from now on to straighten your hair. find a cute style that will fit the 2-3 length of healthy hair that you do have. once you get it cut like this it should grow in no time. It depends on your skin tone...olive?, pinkish? If you are dying it yourself and want a light brown colour always use a dark blonde, I've found that light brown always goes med brown. Clairol Natural Instincts is always a great choice because if it's too dark at first it will fade. Even though it's semi permanent I went from blonde to brown using this and it was an easier transition for me. Please ask your hair stylist or the cosmetician for the correct shade of brown for your skin tone!

Blond hair is always fading, so first off, you should buy Clairol Shimmer Lights purple shampoo (it will get rid of the brassiness and return the blond to the same color it was when first colored). Second, why don't you consider light brown lowlights? It's not as dramatic, and if you dislike them, you can always just get more blond highlights. That way, you won't damage your hair nearly as much as you would with an all over dye job, and you can still get the darkness more appropriate with winter. Luck!

How do I get the colour out of my hair?

You can do it yourself, with the permanent dye like Nice and Easy. Only problem there is that it will take a couple of treatments to get the colour right. The best thing to do is go to a salon for the first time and get it done properly, and then maintain your colour yourself at home.

I am a natural blond and every now and then dye my hair Auburn. I go to the salon for the first change, and then maintain with Nice %26amp; Easy. If I want to go back to my blond, I do it the same way. At the end of the day, it will cost you alot less this way, and you KNOW it looks good.

yes,you can use the ones they sell at pharmacies or supermarkets,but don't go drastic,use something which is near your natural hair color so that when you hair grows out,it will not be very obvious.just follow the instructions very well.

i have very thin hair, im practicly bolding.

i cant wear any type of extentions ranging from clip in, sewed in, or the individual kind because my hair is so thin its very noticable

Take your can of Big Sexy Hair hairspray, bend over, flip your hair forward, and spray your hair (the part closer to your neck: the under part). Spray near the roots to fluff them up. Boom! Thick hair. And dont forget to use a volumizing shampoo.

First of all, have you tried the actual prescription strength thickening shampoo? Like corvinex or something like that. The thickening shampoos by Pantene, Garnier, etc. are a joke! I have a friend who is a stylist, and she said all of the brands you can buy at a grocery store do nothing but damage your hair more by adding wax to it (so it appears healthier at first, but as the wax builds up, your hair breaks off and falls out). The only one (if you HAVE to buy from a grocery store) is the Suave professionals that are like "compare to Paul Mitchell... and compare to Nexxus, etc". They are the same as salon hair products but cheaper!

You've probably actually been damaging your hair more and more by trying to fix it!!

Teasing your hair actually breaks it off, so don't do that if you don't have to! It sounds like what your hair needs is some TLC! I would go to a professional salon and get a deep conditioning treatment, then ask them about salon thickening shampoo or go to a dermetologist to get a prescription for one. Don't color it for a while, dont straighten it for a while, HAIR EXTENSIONS ARE HORRIBLE for your hair...

literally-give your hair a rest for a while instead of trying to do so much to it!!!

Curled hair is sexier,especially on blondes! It gives alot more fullness and it makes for a healthier head of hair.It's alot more sexier for a guy when you are looking down on him and he has that fullness of your hair around him,,besides that heard crimping your hair can break the ends more then curling and eventually it gets all frizzy.

Well, my hair was died kinda golden blond i spose, but i had bad light brown roots so I dyed it this morning. It doesnt look appalling, but I miss the golden tones my hair had before. The dye really was the closest I could find (my hair went golden blond before I didnt dye it- so I couldnt use a previous dye)

So, how could I maybe get my hair a bit lighter? I have natural highlights which show through whatever dye I use, so how could I get them a bit lighter?

if it want dark after you colored it ,,it will wash out and will bring the previous color,, but will take some time,, but if u want something now,, I'll go get clarifying shampoo.. which removes products build ups and etc.. shampoo with that and leave it in for 5 minutes.. and rinse and condition.. it will remove access color build ups as well.. this way u are not damaging ur hair,,

If you want an overall appearance of lighter hair do an all over FINE weave.

please tell me u didn't u know u can't get it of now only if u bleach it but it will totally ruine ur hair trust me i dyed my hair darker too and now the salon ladies said my hair was abused, i put baking soda, bleach...etc and now i look like a dalmation best thing for u to do now is to get a trim and buy a cleanseing shampoo like head %26amp; shoulder or sauve make sure it says cleansing that willl kind of get ur color lighter.

You haaaave to use bleach, unless you used a non-permanent dye. If your going to bleach it, go to a salon to do it. Don't colour your hair agian because you cant lighten by putting colour over colour. If its non-permanent let it wash out, or use Sun-in (a spray in you hair product that lightens your hair gradually with heat). Dont use lemon juice though! The acid is dangerous to your hair and will dry it out. Lemon juice works some times but leaves your hair feeling like straw.

I thought of lemon too,but what if it reacts with the chemicals in the dye??

there used to be "rescue" products you could buy to lighten it,I worked in a salon years ago but can't remember what we used,best ask a professional.
